A slow poke who loves salty snacks: Being nearsighted and slow-moving is a bad combo in the wild—but if you’re sporting 30,000 sharp quills each tipped with 700-800 microscopic backwards-facing barbs, you can afford to take your time. The business end of a Porcupine is no joke -- quills are very painful to remove so most predators steer clear. Weighing 10-25 lbs., these herbivores eat a variety of trees, bark, woody shrubs, buds, wildflowers and grasses. Porcupines are equipped with a strong set of gnawing teeth that are always growing and need to be honed. The Boys Are Back In Town: Male Red-Winged Blackbirds are one of the first migrants to appear each spring, though you might hear them first, these birds are chatty! Male Red-wings return from warmer climates before the females so they can claim the best territory and fend off rivals. When the females arrive it’s show time and the males will do everything they can to get noticed and find a mate. Red-wings prefer open fields, marsh and wetland habitats.
